Rebecca Dittman is a self-taught maker, with over 40 years experience of using a variety of materials, ranging from paper and fibres, through to ceramics, glass and metals. The main inspiration for her work comes primarily from the intrinsic qualities of the medium in which she is working together with stimuli from the natural world. Her education in the natural sciences has played an important, but largely unconscious part, in the development of her artistic style which for her is about beauty and form. The work contains a high degree of skill and craftsmanship and an individual approach to the use of the materials.
Although her work has remained on a domestic scale, as that is where much of her market lies, she has always had ambitions to produce works on a large scale, and this led to the commission at the Liverpool Women's Hospital in 1998, 'Motions of the Sun'.
