Motions of The Sun - Plans
Having taken this cultural and philosophical approach to the design, Rebecca decided that the design should depict the passage of the sun across the sky, portraying the three main aspects of Sunrise, Midday and Sunset, placed on a golden arc extending metaphorically from East to West.
The space chosen for the location was a wall of one of the main staircases in the hospital. Located on the third landing of this staircase, it offered the viewer the advantage of approaching the piece from above or below, and the choice to stop off to have a longer look.
The only main disadvantage of the site, was the flourescent lighting unit on the ceiling in the centre of the space. This cast a hue on the wall which was unacceptable, and conflited with the proposed spot lighting arrangements. As this was part of the hospital's emergency lighting system, wiring arrangements had to be made so that it was off, apart from in emergency situations.
