Training Outline
The workshop can be broken into five sections.
1. Introduction
This deals with issues of prejudice and stereotype which effect the trans community. It is hoped that this
will be the start of a process of shifting any stereotypical view of transgender people held by participants
which may have been gained from the media, advertising and cinema. There is an opportunity to talk about
people’s understanding of the terminology used to describe transgender people and their issues.
2. He, She or T? 20 Questions to Make You Think
This 'quiz' uses 20 images of people taken from the Internet. Participants have to decide within a short
period of time, whether each image is either of a genetic male, a genetic female or a trans person. The
'quiz' is designed to continue the process of unsettling any preconceptions which have been illustrated in
the introduction
3. The Road To Transition
The lives of trans people are uniquely coloured by their need to move toward living in their chosen gender
identity. Transition, a complex process, is poorly understood by most people, this section of the workshop
is intended to give insights into the benefits of and problems encountered by trans people in achieving a more settled and
creative life in their new gender.
4. Food For Legal Eagles
The most important piece of legislation to effect the lives of transgender people has been The Gender
Recognition Act 2004 (GRA). This part of the workshop discusses the ways in which everyone can be effected
by this legislation especially professionals in the performance of their duties. Areas covered include:
- the history of the fight for legal rights for transgender people
- the purpose of the GRA; conditions for granting a Gender Recognition Certificates
- other issues dealt within the GRA
- Section 22 - prohibition of disclosure of information
- Other relevant legislation
5. Conclusion
At the end of the workshop participants are able to reflect on what they have learnt and have an opportunity ask any further questions
